Type Locality and Naming

Upper formation of the Sa Pa Gr. The type section is located in 25 km southwest of Lao Cai Town (N = 22 0 23', E = 103 ° 52'). It was named after the Da Dinh mountain/village by Nguyen Van Hoanh et al., 2000.

Lithology and Thickness

Characteristic section at Da Dinh Mt is 600 m thick: (1). Fine to medium-grained, medium-bedded tremolite-bearing sugary-texture marble, grading upwards into fine- to coarse-grained dolomitic marble and white, medium-bedded to massive dolomite; 250 m thick. (2). White, medium-grained, thick-bedded to massive dolomitic marble interbedded with banded marble containing tremolite, muscovite and scapolite; 350 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably upon the Cha Pa Fm.

Upper contact

Unconformably beneath conglomerate of the Lower Cambrian Cam Duong Fm.

Regional extent

Bands and small massifs of limestone mountains scattered from Lao Cai Province to Yen Bai Province.

Correlative with the Dongying Fm limestone in Yunnan of Sinian age.

Age 

Late Neoproterozoic according to conformably below the Cam Duong Fm that is assigned as Early Cambrian. Assumed to only be upper Ediacaran here, because there no indication of Cryogenian glacial deposits in the underlying Cha Pa Fm.
